Technical And Ethical Criterion

By Photographer Luigi Cassinelli

On Photography

I capture what LIGHT and SILVER generate, right in the moment I SEE. I do not fabricate images. I exhibit what I captured.

Nothing Virtual

No Retouching

No Digital Photos

No Film Recording

No Artificial Intelligence

I capture ur-photographs. An ur-photograph is the unique physical record generated IN THE MOMENT I release my camera shutter. In that moment, three forces interact: the photons reflected by what I observe, the silver halide crystals layered in the film, and my decision to capture that moment in time.

Such interaction instantly creates the latent image in the emulsion, later revealed to our eyes in the physical, final form usually called photographic negative (other developers could reveal the latent image as a direct positive). The ur-photograph is unique. It bears an existential adventure sealed by its own light, not by post-production.

On Printing

The mission of Materia Et Lumen is to exhibit faithful enlargements of ur-photographs. All printed works neither stem from algorithms nor reshape the original impression of light on silver halide.

On Privacy

Privacy matters to me. Privacy is a fundamental right cited in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. On this website, I exhibit a series of portfolios. The complete body of my work reveals moments of my life, and the lives of others, that I am not willing to upload to the Web. I am interested to meet collectors, gallerists, museum curators, publishers, art and creative directors who respect this choice and would like to see my printed work in person.
